George Will is Not a Supercilious Rat.

IN FACT, HE’S ON THE RIGHT COURSE.

Much has recently been made of Mr. Will’s announcement that he is leaving the GOP, and is instead registering as an Independent. Now this writer is no adherent of Mr. Will’s Hobbesian view of Western history as a variant of free will premised on Thomist faith, but traditional Roman courage must be applauded when it appears in any quarter. A striking initial impression of the GOP regulars who are flocking to the Chosen One  brings to mind Von Pappen and the Christian Democrats who were certain that they could control the new Chancellor. Imagine for a moment his first days in office. Who will advise him when Vladimir immediately dispatches units into Estonia and Ukraine simultaneously! And will the Chosen One listen? Already we know that both Senator Corker and Speaker Ryan will have little influence. Will it be Senator Sessions? OMG. There no longer is a GOP establishment to guide the Chosen One. Who, actually, will be calling the (literal) shots? No, as Hannah Arendt surmised in another day, Men in Dark Times act in the real world, with memories of the past and a sober apprehension of the future.
